In the second installment from the Ruptrue Northeast Jui Jitsu Tournament (the first featuring Jared Weiner’s superfight rout of Tony Passos is here) features more of both the fighters who matter and the fighters who will matter to Philadelphia’s local MMA scene.
The freshest face to have an impact was Semper Fi’s 15 year old Danielle Kelly; she won the woman’s open Gi division. From the other end of the spectrum comes the female superfight between Sheri Hockman and Maggie Bertonazzi who trains locally at Maxercise. Both women move with the smooth distinction of instinct, the result of years of meticulous training but Bertonazzi had the edge and it became more apparent as the fight progressed. Her transitions cut out of Hockman’s grasp landing her in vicious top positions. When Hockman did emerge from underneath Bertonazzi, she was too gassed to fight off an armbar which ended the match.
In another superfight, local MMA product Chris Wing put his ground game to the test against seasoned international competitor John Delbrugge. Wing comes out and pushes the pace with his size, strength and surprising grappling savvy. However, none of that overcomes Delbrudge’s advantage and he sticks a few perfectly timed explosions in order come through and take the fight on points.
One of the peripheral differences between an MMA event and a jui jitsu event is smut. MMA events usually flaunt beautiful women in skimpy cloths (which makes for a convenient wrap-up segment). However, the family environment of the Rupture Tournament meant no such luck, so in its place is something a little unusual and quite the contrary. Adam Rocco of local outfit Rocco MMA stepped up and took on a monster of a wrestler who’s size and stature are only matched — and in fact complimented — by the back hair bushing out of a wrestling singlet. While it was a bit of a spectacle, the guy was a serious grappler and Rocco deserves props for stepping up to him despite an outrageous size disadvantage. He wasn’t able to come out on top and paid for his ambition with a few tense — and I would imagine grotesque — moments underneath the great beast.
Also on record is a fresh face from a fresh gym. Lloyd Irvin black belt Brad Court, who has been at the helm of Paramount BJJ for the last few years, fielded two white belts with MMA aspirations. One, Stanley Eugene, made the video cut on his way to taking first place in the 190-210 pound division.
